Staying in God's presence

Psalms 51:4

Against you, you only, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.

When I read this verse as part of my confession prayers before God, He opened my eyes to the realities of these words:

  1. When we sin, we actually sin against God. It is knowing what God requires of us and deliberately choosing to ignore Him. Sin can also be unintentional.
  2. There is a drift from God's presence that makes it easier for us to sin. This drift results from the lack of thinking about God.

Psalms 51:5-6

5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

The reality is that we have been born in sin, we can't separate ourselves from sin. God requires righteousness and we are without excuse because He made provision for the forgiveness of sin through the cross of Jesus.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Psalms 51:7

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Only God can take away our sin that turns us from thinking of God and being in His presence.

As we look to God to help us stay in His presence every moment, we make the below prayer that David made:

Psalms 51:10-12

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
    or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
