Don't take revenge, it is God's

Rom 12:19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[d] says the Lord.

In obedience to God, I should not take revenge. God says that He will repay.

Rom 12:20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[e]

Instead of vengeance, God gives us an alternative. He says that we should repay evil with good . God assures us that when we do good to our enemies, it is same as piling hot coal on their heads! A weapon in deed. This is one beautiful way to deal with those who seek our worst.

Rom 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

In v 21, God explains His ways further by assuring us that when we do good to those who offend us we are in fact overcoming sin! Wow God's ways...

In the literal sense, we are burning the enemy and of course under such circumstances they are weakened by our good deeds. When we revenge we are overcome by evil.

1 Pet 3:9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing

This verse encourages me to let God revenge and focus on blessing my offenders because :
  1. This is God's calling on my life
  2. We will inherit a blessing
1 Thess 5:15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.

The emphasis God is making here is that we strive. There is work that we have to do to keep from being vengeful. It is striving to do good. If we have to strive then we know it is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that we will succeed in repaying evil with good.

Zech 4:6 So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.

Mark 11:25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

This is another important solution that God gives us to keep us from being vengeful; consistent prayers and forgiveness. God reminds us to let go if we have 'carried' anyone in our hearts grudgingly, so that God can also forgive us.

Consistent prayers are needed in our lives. As often as we commune with God, He will remind us to forgive and let go of those who have offended us.
